The national organization delegates responsibility for local groups to the state WMU associations, with each association electing its own president. The president, in turn, serves on a national board that determines yearly themes and goals for the mission offerings, produces literature for WMU meetings, and conducts leadership training. State organizations also sponsor mission education and material distribution, coordinate state-wide offering campaigns, and hold annual conferences and spiritual retreats.

WMU raises funds for missions through two annual offerings, the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions. Every penny given to these offerings goes directly to the missionaries supported by the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board and North American Mission Board. Through these gifts, WMU has raised more than $2 billion since its inception. In addition to these offerings, WMU raises money through a variety of other means, including the sale of magazines and books, gifts, and Christian-themed gift items.
